I agree with Diana about the long narratives. After a long day, it is difficult to face a report with long narratives. Those reports were not worth it per hour for me.

I am thinking that because you are new, you could not self-assign but wait to be assigned. When you are assigned, you will get access to instructions and the questions for the report.
You are posing as a typical customer. When I go to car showrooms, I sometimes accept a coffee when waiting to do a test drive. There is nothing wrong with this.
I know that there are shops in which you write a test, posing as someone who is writing an exam test for certification. They want feedback to see if the staff is following protocol. ie. not allowing electronics, etc.

The more confident you are when you go on your shops, the more fun you will have. A way to do a good job and feel confident is to read the instructions and questions over three times. After you have done the same shop, you will just need a quick refresher.
